Climate change and the other developing countries: Implications for climate policy
(June 30
, 10:30 AM Pacific;1:30 PM Eastern, 7:30 PM Stockholm. One hour.)

When we talk about developing countries and what part they could play in climate policy, we usually refer to China, India and other rapidly industrialising countries. These countries have gone through a phase of strong economic growth and, as a result, have become major greenhouse gas emitters in their own right. However, they are the exception rather than the rule: the majority of developing countries still have very low emissions. For example, all of Africa produces around 3% of the total global emissions, while the United States alone is responsible for almost 30%. But it is these African countries, as well as other poor nations including small island states in the Pacific, the Caribbean and the Indian Ocean, that are among the most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. This injustice is the reason climate policy is not only about reducing greenhouse gas emissions. An equally important objective of climate policy is to provide financial and technical support to the vulnerable countries in the developing world, to help them prepare for and adapt to the impacts of climate change. This webinar will discuss why this second objective can no longer be overlooked in discussions on a new global climate deal, to be agreed in Copenhagen in December this year.

Dr Richard Klein is a Senior Research Fellow at the Stockholm Environment Institute in Sweden. His research interests include methodological aspects of vulnerability assessment, societal adaptation to climate change, and integration of climate and development policy. He has been involved in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change since 1994 and is thus a co-recipient of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. He also contributed to the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, to the Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change and to Tony Blair's report "Breaking the Climate Deadlock". He is the editor-in-chief of the new academic journal Climate and Development (http://www.earthscan.co.uk/?tabid=29957 ).

ISSP Competency Study Results
Oct 14 @ 9:00am Pacific Time

The interest and momentum behind sustainability has created a whole new professional track. Professionals working in the field come from varied backgrounds and bring a multitude of skills and abilities.  That makes for a rich and diverse collection of professionals, but it makes it very hard for people who want to enter the field to find the best and most expedient path.  It also complicates hiring for organizations who aren't sure what they should be asking for.

Last year ISSP launched its first research study to answer the question: "What should a sustainabiltiy professional know how to do?" We believe the answer will not only be of keen interest to our members, but to employers and institutions of higher eduation as well.  Tune into this webinar and hear a report of the findings by the research committee lea by Executive Director, Marsha Willard. You'll want to know what you should know!

This event is FREE for ISSP members. Non-members cost is $25.

Save the Buyosphere! The Potential (and Pitfalls) of Green Marketing
December 15, 2009 (9-10 am Pacific time)

Green marketing is back, as companies ranging from GE to P&G are  trying to cash in on the renewed interest in products that help  consumers be greener and cleaner. How do you sell “green” in a world with a seemingly insatiable appetite for more, More, MORE? In a world in which Wal-Mart, GM, and BP are waving the green flag, how can marketers be heard—and believed?

Join Joel Makower as he offers real-world tales from the trenches, the latest market trends, and insight and inspiration to help marketers succeed in the growing green marketplace. Joel Makower of GreenBiz has been studying the green marketing field for over 20 years. His most recent book is Strategies for the Green Economy.

This event is FREE for both members and non-members, an early holiday gift from ISSP!
